Just because a car is made by an American brand doesn’t automatically mean it was made here in the United States. If you are looking for a truly American-made car, the Kogod Made in America Index can help you narrow down the field. Not surprisingly, once you look, you’ll find Chevrolet smack dab in the center.
Each year, this index evaluates the domestic content of new vehicles for sale in the United States to see which models have the highest percentage of American parts and labor. This year, both the Chevrolet Corvette and Volt were found to be two of the most American cars available today. At the top of the pack is the Chevy Corvette, which received a score of 83.5 out of a possible 100. The innovative plug-in hybrid Chevy Volt came away with a score of 83.0.
The Kogod index uses seven criteria to score vehicles and determine how much each model contributes to the U.S. economy. They include the following:
- Profit margin
- Research and development
- Inventory, capital, and other expenses
- Body, chassis, and electrical components
Not only are Chevrolets American-made, but they’re also perfect examples of the American tradition of embracing the freedom of the open road. To experience that freedom for yourself, stop into Sunnyside Chevrolet and take a Chevy for a test drive.
